this community scheme offes flexible short breaks within a family setting to chldren and young people with disabilities

What is Shared Care?
Shared Care is a community scheme run by South Ayrshire Council to provide flexible short stays, within a family setting, to children and young people with disabilities.

What benefits does it bring?
Shared Caring provides new experiences and friendships for the children and young people while parents get time to relax and the opportunity to do things with other family members.

Shared CareWho can become a Shared Carer?
You don’t need to have any special qualifications.
A caring attitude, an interest in children and patience are more important.
It doesn’t matter if you are:

  • Single or married
  • Employed or unemployed
  • With or without children of your own.

What does Shared Care involve?
Shared Carers care for children and young people in their homes. This can be for a few hours after school, for the occasional overnight or weekend visit, or perhaps just a day at the weekend.

What help do Shared Carers receive?
The Shared Care scheme is run by South Ayrshire Council’s Special Needs Team. Carers are paid an allowance plus expenses and receive ongoing training and support.
