HomeSupported Caring
Help us to care in South Ayrshire

Why do we need supported carers?
The idea behind supported caring is to provide young people, temporarily, with the practical help and support they need to move on to their own tenancy. Adults who provide supported caring placements can offer help with many practical issues, i.e. budgeting, cooking and maintaining a home. This gives young people more independence but still provides a secure environment and an experienced adult who they can turn to for advice and support.

HelpWho can become a carer?
Most people can become carers, there are no special requirements. At present we are looking for ordinary families and individuals in the South Ayrshire area who can offer young people accommodation and a variety of supports.

What qualifications are needed?
No special qualifications other than a genuine interest in, and concern for young people. Many of you will find that your own experiences of family life will have equipped you to provide a supported carer placement.

Housework References
As you would be involved with young people who have been looked after by South Ayrshire Community Services, it will be necessary for you to give references, which will be taken up in confidence. This short procedure ensures your peace of mind and the safety of the young person.

What help will carers receive?
All carers have a support worker who will be involved throughout each placement. In Ayr a group of carers meet each month to share ideas and information.

Games What about expenses?
You will not be out of pocket. An allowance will be paid. Financial arrangements will be discussed in full, prior to any placement. Most carers at present receive a weekly allowance to cover casts involved and this is reviewed regularly.
