South Ayrshire Council Youth Strategy
South Ayrshire recognises the value of youth work and youth services in contributing positively to young people’s personal growth and development, and the contribution that this can make to the wider community.
In 2007 the Scottish executive published a national youth strategy document “Moving Forward: A Strategy for Improving Young Peoples Chances Through Youth Work”. This document sets the national context and backdrop in relation to the value and importance of quality youth work provision and services for young people.

In order to develop and deliver local services in a coordinated and effective way a multi-agency partnership group was formed to develop a joint strategy document.
In December 2007 the Council’s Leadership Panel approved and endorsed the ”South Ayrshire Council Youth Strategy: Investing In Young People, 2007-2010”
The Strategy Document sets out key aims & values:
1.Young people to be able to benefit from youth work opportunities, which make a real difference to their lives through:
- Youth work activities, open to any young person who wishes to attend, offered by local authorities and voluntary organisations; and
- Targeted and specialised provision designed to meet the needs of young people who are particularly vulnerable or who have specific needs.
2.Engagement and consultation with young people to enable them to gain a voice and influence the delivery of services that affect their lives.
3. A youth work sector equipped and empowered to achieve positive outcomes for young people.
- South Ayrshire “Youth Champion”: Councillor John Hampton has been appointed as Political Champion and sits on the Youth Strategy Implementation Group.
- Youth Strategy Officer: The Council has approved funding for the new post of Youth Strategy Officer. This is a permanent post, located within the Councils Integrated ‘ Services Team, and will work with the Implementation Group, partner agencies and local youth groups to develop and implement local Youth Action plans to meet the aims of the Strategy.
- Youth Strategy Implementation Group: This group comprises personnel and representatives from key Council Departments and Services, external partner agencies and the Voluntary sector. It is the task of the group to develop and implement the strategy. This group feeds into the Integrated Children’s Services Strategic Team.
